Faces: Portraits with a Story

My portrait work grows from the same love of landscape and history that shapes my photography of places. I’m drawn to faces that seem to hold weather and time—lines earned honestly, eyes that have watched change, quiet smiles hinting at untold stories. Whether in the city or on a windswept hill, I try to create space for people simply to be themselves, so what appears in the frame feels unforced and true.

Light and setting always serve the person. I favour natural light—a window’s softness, a grey Scottish sky, or low evening sun—to reveal texture without distraction. Simple backgrounds keep the focus on expression and small gestures: the turn of a shoulder, the clasp of hands, a fleeting glance.

A successful portrait feels like a quiet conversation caught in a single moment. I aim not just to show how someone looks, but who they are when the mask slips—honest, resilient, and alive.
