Inveraray Castle

£30.00

Eilean Donan Castle stands on a small tidal island where Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh meet, near the village of Dornie in the western Highlands, making it one of Scotland’s most dramatically sited fortresses. First fortified in the thirteenth century, it was built as a stronghold against Norse incursions and later became closely associated with the Mackenzies of Kintail and their MacRae allies. The castle was largely destroyed by government ships in 1719 after being occupied by Spanish troops during a Jacobite rising, and for nearly 200 years its ruins lay exposed to the weather. In 1911 Lieutenant Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island and oversaw a meticulous 20‑year restoration, completed in 1932, creating the romantic battlements and bridge that now appear in countless photographs and films. Today, Eilean Donan is a symbol of the Highlands, its stone walls, arched causeway and ever‑changing backdrop of water and mountains drawing visitors from around the world to step inside centuries of Scottish history.
